Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse revealed a whistleblower disclosure that exposes rushed, substandard renovations and questionable contracts at the Kennedy Center, all tied to former President Trump's interference and disregard for public institutions.
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island on Saturday brought to light a whistleblower disclosure, submitted by the Government Accountability Project, that uncovers disturbing allegations about recent renovations at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The report, which Whitehouse said was supported by statements from former project managers and internal documents, paints a picture of a project recklessly accelerated to meet a December deadline, solely to accommodate President Donald Trump's self-serving televised events.
The senator outlined how these shortcuts, driven by political vanity, led to rusting steel columns, a reflecting pool that may need to be rebuilt, and a bathroom floor that was redone simply because the tile color did not meet someone's arbitrary standards. Whitehouse further revealed that the whistleblower documents describe an $8 million contract for the concert hall floor, handed to an inexperienced firm without any prior concert-hall credentials, and that no-bid contracts were the norm—classic hallmarks of cronyism and disregard for transparency.
Whitehouse has formally demanded answers from Kennedy Center executive director Matt Floca, requesting a response by July 23 and attaching a damning 83-page appendix of emails, photographs, and other records cited in the whistleblower disclosure. The Kennedy Center, still reeling from the Trump administration's attempts at political takeover, has yet to comment on these serious allegations.
It should be remembered that the center was placed under new leadership after Trump tried to erase its legacy by renaming the venue and installing himself as chairman—a blatant power grab that was only stopped by a federal judge. Ongoing legal challenges have kept the center open, but the shadow of Trump-era corruption and mismanagement continues to loom large.
