Democrats Express Concern Over Trump Administration Actions Ahead of Election

摘要

Democratic officials warned that recent moves by the Trump administration, including the dismissal of election officials, could affect the 2024 election, while Republicans and state officials argue the impact will be limited.

Democratic leaders said recent actions by the Trump administration raise serious concerns about the integrity of the upcoming election. Strategist David Axelrod posted on X that the administration appears to be preparing a contingency plan to influence the vote, noting the president’s low popularity among GOP voters.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz told CNN’s John Berman that constituents in her heavily Democratic district are worried the president might try to cancel the election or impose martial law. She said she is attempting to calm those fears.

The administration’s latest move was the dismissal of three of the four commissioners of the Election Assistance Commission, a bipartisan agency that distributes federal funds to help states run secure elections. The Federal Election Commission also currently lacks a quorum, limiting its ability to oversee campaign finance.

Critics highlighted additional appointments, such as Bill Pulte’s temporary role as Director of National Intelligence, and executive actions affecting mail-in voting and the SAVE Act, which they say could suppress voter participation. They also pointed to the president’s repeated claims of election fraud as a justification for potential federal intervention.

Policy director Michael McNulty of Issue One described the firings as part of a broader pattern aimed at centralizing control over election administration. However, watchdog groups noted that the Election Assistance Commission does not directly manage elections and that the impact of the dismissals on the 2024 vote is likely limited.

State officials in several Democratic-leaning states have introduced legislation to protect their election processes from federal interference, including measures to restrict sharing of voter-registration data and limit federal law-enforcement presence at polling places.

David Becker, founder of the Center for Election Innovation and Research, said the election system remains robust, emphasizing that states are responsible for conducting elections and are performing that role effectively. He downplayed the significance of the commissioner dismissals compared with other recent legal setbacks for the administration.
