Meta withdraws Instagram-based AI image generator after backlash

Summary

Meta removed a feature that let users generate images using public Instagram accounts after criticism from creators and unions, while keeping its Muse Image generator available.

Meta announced on Tuesday that a new AI image generation tool allowed users to reference any public Instagram account when creating pictures. The feature, which relied on the Muse Image model, was taken offline on Friday, just over three days after its launch. Meta said the decision followed feedback that the tool "missed the mark" and was no longer available.

The company’s blog post now notes that the original intent was to give people control over whether their public content could be used, but the response indicated otherwise. The SAG-AFTRA union criticized the lack of a clear opt-in mechanism, calling it "unacceptable" and a "miscalculation of public sentiment" regarding the risks of non-consensual digital replicas. A union spokesperson added, "With the dangers of nonconsensual digital replicas well known to all, a feature that encouraged that behavior is unwise. We appreciate its discontinuance. It is the responsible thing to do."

Meta continues to offer the Muse Image generator, described in its blog as a "creative partner" that helps users turn ideas into high-quality visuals for download or sharing on Meta platforms.
