Harris County medical examiner classifies ICE shooting death as homicide

Summary

The Harris County Medical Examiner ruled the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, killed by an ICE agent in Houston, a homicide, while federal and local officials call for investigations.

The Harris County Medical Examiner has classified the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo as a homicide, citing a penetrating gunshot wound to the torso. The ruling describes the manner of death and does not constitute a legal finding of criminal liability.

ICE officials said the shooting occurred at about 6:50 a.m. on Tuesday in the 6800 block of Canal Street when agents attempted to arrest Araujo, an undocumented Mexican national. According to ICE, Araujo rammed an ICE vehicle and tried to run over an officer, prompting the officer to fire in self-defense. Araujo was later pronounced dead at Ben Taub Hospital.

Family members and civil-rights groups have questioned the federal account and are urging an independent, transparent investigation. The Department of Homeland Security noted that the officers involved had not yet received body-worn cameras, attributing the delay to funding interruptions caused by recent government shutdowns. DHS added that equipping ICE agents with body cameras is a priority amid a reported rise in assaults on agents.

Without body-camera footage, investigators will rely on witness statements, physical evidence and any other available video. The shooting remains under federal investigation, and Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare has opened a parallel review, asking witnesses to come forward. Houston city officials said they lack jurisdiction over the incident, but Mayor John Whitmire and several city council members have called for a transparent federal probe and public release of the findings.
