Man arrested on suspicion of murder in former MP Ann Widdecombe's death
A 26-year-old man was detained in Devon on suspicion of murdering former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe, whose body was found with serious injuries at her home.
Police in England arrested a 26-year-old white British man on Friday on suspicion of murder after the body of former MP Ann Widdecombe was discovered with serious injuries at her Dartmoor, Devon residence. Devon and Cornwall Police Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said investigators do not believe the killing was linked to terrorism or political motives, and no motive has been disclosed.
Widdecombe, who served as a Conservative MP from 1987 to 2010 and later joined the Reform UK party, was also known for appearances on several UK reality-television programmes. Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued a statement expressing sympathy for Widdecombe’s family and friends.
"This is really shocking news, and my thoughts, I think all of our thoughts, will be with the family and friends of Ann Widdecombe at this awful time for them," the prime minister said.
Anton Du Beke, who partnered Widdecombe on a 2010 dance competition show, posted a message on social media describing the news as “the saddest of news” and recalling his positive experiences with her.
"I had the most brilliant time with Ann on Strictly Come Dancing… This is a sad day, and I shall remember her fondly and miss her," Du Beke wrote.
The investigation continues, and police have not released further details about the suspect or any possible motive.
