Tesla's Lower-Cost Model Y Spotted in China, No New Models Confirmed
Images circulating on Chinese social media reveal a more affordable version of Tesla's Model Y, featuring reduced features but no significant new models as previously suggested. Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed the new offering is a stripped-down Model Y, not an entirely new vehicle.
A more affordable version of Tesla's Model Y has been seen in images and videos posted on Chinese social media platforms, showing a vehicle with fewer features compared to the current model. The sighting follows Tesla's recent statements about introducing lower-cost models, which were clarified by CEO Elon Musk during the company's second-quarter earnings call. Musk confirmed that the new affordable option is a variant of the Model Y, rather than an entirely new model as previously hinted.
The vehicle, shown alongside the refreshed Juniper Model Y, appears similar in size but with several differences. Camouflage covers much of the exterior, but visible changes include a shortened rear light bar and the absence of the "TESLA" logo on the back. Interior images suggest the removal of the panoramic glass roof and the rear screen, features added in the Juniper update. The center console design has also been simplified, and the turn signal stalk remains present.
These modifications indicate a rollback of features introduced in recent updates, likely aimed at reducing production costs. While Tesla has previously offered lower-priced versions of its vehicles by limiting features such as all-wheel drive or using different battery types, it is not yet clear if similar changes will be part of this new Model Y variant. There has been no indication of a more affordable Model 3 or other new models at this time.
