Denmark's Prime Minister Reaffirms Greenland's Sovereignty at NATO Summit

摘要

Mette Frederiksen told NATO leaders that Greenland is not for sale and called for respect of Denmark's territorial integrity, while U.S. President Trump reiterated his desire for American control of the island.

Denmark’s prime minister Mette Frederiksen said at the NATO summit in Ankara that Greenland remains under Danish sovereignty and is "not for sale," urging allies to respect the territory’s right to self-determination. She added that Denmark is prepared to defend all NATO members, including its own territory, and called on the alliance to honour its mutual defence commitments.

President Donald Trump again argued that the United States should control Greenland for NATO defence, describing the island as "very important" for global security. He claimed the U.S. could reduce its European troop presence if it assumed control of Greenland.

Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir echoed concerns about the proposal, stating that Greenland’s residents do not wish to become part of the United States and urging NATO to keep its focus on Russia.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg and other leaders have not indicated a shift in policy, while the summit continues to address broader security issues, including the war in Ukraine.
