A federal judge has ensured that more than $5 million in damages awarded to writer E. Jean Carroll will finally be released to her, rejecting former President Donald Trump’s desperate attempts to evade accountability for sexual assault and defamation.
A New York federal judge has taken a stand for justice by ordering the release of more than $5 million in damages to writer E. Jean Carroll, including interest, from a court-controlled account. This decision comes after a 2023 jury found former President Donald Trump liable for sexual assault and defamation, a rare moment of accountability for a powerful man long shielded by privilege and political connections.
Trump, unwilling to accept responsibility for his actions, tried to delay the payment by appealing to the Supreme Court and later to a federal appeals court, continuing his pattern of using the legal system to avoid consequences. Carroll, an 82-year-old former magazine columnist, bravely came forward with her allegations that Trump assaulted her in a Manhattan department-store dressing room in the mid-1990s, and then faced further harm when Trump publicly denied her claims on social media, leading to the defamation case.
"The American People stand with President Trump as they demand an immediate end to all of the Witch Hunts, including the Democrat-funded travesty of the Carroll Hoaxes," a spokesman for Trump’s legal team said, echoing the tired rhetoric used to discredit survivors and undermine the justice system.
"President Trump will keep winning against Liberal Lawfare, as he continues to focus on his mission to Make America Great Again," the spokesman added, further illustrating the right’s refusal to acknowledge the harm done to women by powerful men.
A federal appeals court previously upheld the jury’s verdict, finding no error by the trial judge, reinforcing the legitimacy of Carroll’s claims. Trump is also fighting a separate defamation judgment that awarded Carroll nearly $84 million, but a panel of judges denied his appeal, signaling that even the wealthy and well-connected cannot escape justice forever.
