Summary

The White House anti-fraud task force, under the leadership of Vice President JD Vance, has denied 96% of Medicare organ-transplant claims since March, responding to a shocking rise in payments from $200 million in 2019 to $14.4 billion in 2025, and taking decisive action to safeguard taxpayer funds.

Medicare payments for tissue and organ transplants skyrocketed from $200 million in 2019 to an outrageous $14.4 billion in 2025, exposing the rampant abuse and waste that has plagued the system for years. In a bold move to protect American taxpayers, the White House anti-fraud task force, led by Vice President JD Vance, has denied 96% of claims filed since March, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz highlighted the alarming surge in claims, which raised serious concerns for hospitals and physician groups. “That's a lot of money,” Oz told reporters in Milwaukee, noting that unchecked spending could severely strain the health-care system and jeopardize its sustainability for future generations.

The task force’s crackdown extended beyond transplant claims. CMS identified 4,200 suspicious allograft claims totaling $224 million and uncovered widespread fraudulent activity involving durable medical equipment (DME). Payments to 102 DME suppliers were suspended, and billing privileges for 725 others were revoked—amounting to 8.6% of Medicare-funded DME in 2025. These decisive actions demonstrate a commitment to rooting out fraud and restoring integrity to the program.

A spokesperson for Vance’s office praised the task force’s efforts, which, combined with a moratorium on new DME companies and robust enforcement by the Department of Justice and Health and Human Services, have dramatically reduced DME fraud. “Thanks to the whole-of-government approach, we stopped nearly $220 million in fraudulent skin-substitute claims and suspended or revoked billing privileges for over 800 DME suppliers,” Oz said in a statement, underscoring the administration’s resolve.

The Justice Department also charged 15 individuals in Minnesota for $90 million in alleged fraudulent claims tied to state-funded assistance programs. Vance, in a recent social-media post, celebrated the takedown of large Medicaid and autism-fraud cases, emphasizing the task force’s relentless pursuit of justice and accountability.

Created by executive order in May, the task force unites multiple federal agencies in a coordinated effort to detect and prevent Medicare and Medicaid fraud. The administration’s tough stance sends a clear message: abuse of taxpayer-funded programs will not be tolerated, and those who exploit the system will be held accountable.
