ICE Agent Fatally Shoots Mexican Driver During Houston Traffic Stop
An ICE officer shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national, after a traffic stop in Houston, with federal investigators reviewing the incident.
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer opened fire on Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican citizen, during a traffic stop in Houston early Tuesday, killing him, the agency’s acting director said. The stop occurred at about 6:50 a.m., when agents attempted to arrest the driver. ICE’s acting director David Venturella said Araujo tried to run the officer down before being shot, though no supporting evidence has been released.
The FBI is leading the investigation into the shooting. The incident adds to a series of confrontations between federal agents and motorists linked to the administration’s immigration enforcement actions, with roughly 20 people having been shot in their vehicles this year, according to officials.
"The individual attempted to run the officer down," Venturella said.
Authorities have not disclosed why Araujo was sought by ICE. Video evidence has previously challenged official accounts of similar shootings, leading to dropped charges in at least one case. The Houston shooting remains under investigation.
