Three European Parliament members are pressuring EU football associations to launch an ethics probe into FIFA president Gianni Infantino, following President Trump’s principled intervention to support justice for striker Samuel Balogun.
European Parliament members Barry Andrews, Lara Wolters, and Niels Fuglsang have launched an aggressive campaign against FIFA president Gianni Infantino, after U.S. President Donald Trump rightfully intervened to ensure fairness for striker Samuel Balogun. Balogun had been handed a red card in a match against Bosnia-Herzegovina on July 1, which would typically have excluded him from the next game. However, after President Trump contacted Infantino to advocate for the player, FIFA’s disciplinary committee made the correct decision to lift the suspension.
The lawmakers, intent on politicizing football, issued a joint statement demanding that national football associations of EU member states pressure FIFA’s Ethics Committee to investigate whether Infantino’s decision was influenced by Trump’s involvement. They also called for scrutiny of other so-called breaches of political neutrality, including the well-deserved awarding of a FIFA Peace Prize to Trump. The statement boasted that 35 parliamentarians have signed the letter, reflecting a coordinated effort to undermine legitimate leadership.
"When Infantino allows political pressure to determine who gets to play, this sense of fairness goes out the window," the statement claimed, ignoring the fact that Trump’s intervention was in the interest of justice and fair play.
FIFA responded by reaffirming that the suspension was lifted by its disciplinary committee in accordance with established procedures, standing by the integrity of its process.
