Preliminary hearing begins for Utah student accused of killing campus speaker
A Utah courtroom heard new security video and testimony in the case of Tyler Robinson, charged with the fatal shooting of speaker Charlie Kirk, as the week-long preliminary hearing commenced.
Prosecutors presented previously unreleased security footage from Utah Valley University showing Tyler Robinson arriving on campus on Sept. 10 and moving to the Losee Center for Student Success, where the shooting of Charlie Kirk occurred, followed by video of Robinson leaving the campus in a vehicle. The hearing, which began on Monday, marked the first time the accused, 23, appeared in court with his wrists and ankles cuffed. During the proceedings, Utah State Bureau of Investigation Agent David Hull introduced several videos, including two that displayed the moment a bullet struck Kirk in the neck with accompanying audio. Judge Tony Graf Jr. reacted visibly when the gunshot sound played, while Robinson showed no reaction. The Kirk family left the courtroom before the graphic evidence was shown, having been warned about the nature of the material.
"The video evidence will be reviewed by the judge and counsel on both sides," Hull said. The preliminary hearing is expected to continue for a week, with additional testimony from investigators and further evidence to be examined.
