Australian Prime Minister Albanese apologises for Kylie Minogue remarks on podcast
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he "apologises unequivocally" after comments about Kylie Minogue on a comedy podcast drew criticism from opposition politicians and women's advocates.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese appeared as a guest on "Bush Deep," a video podcast hosted by comedian Nikki Osborne. During the interview, Osborne suggested a "marry, shag, date" game featuring Australian celebrities Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman and Rhonda Burchmore. Albanese responded that he would "marry, shag and date" Minogue, describing her as "terrific."
The remarks prompted condemnation from members of the opposition Liberal Party. > Shadow Communications Minister Sarah Henderson wrote on X that Albanese’s comments were "disrespectful to women, embarrassing to Australians and demean the office of Prime Minister" and called them "extremely poor judgement."
Independent MP Zali Steggall said the interview was "entirely inappropriate" and that Albanese needed to "lead by example and call it out as sexist." Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles told ABC News that the government remains "utterly committed" to defending and elevating women, noting that the current cabinet has gender parity.
Albanese issued a brief statement saying, "I apologise unequivocally for the comments." Kylie Minogue has not responded publicly.
