President Donald Trump is said to have thrown a tablet across the Oval Office after a technical problem prevented him from joining a group video call with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, according to a source cited by The Wall Street Journal. The incident allegedly occurred during French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to the White House in February 2025, about two weeks into Trump's second term.

The report also states that in January 2025, roughly 30 European leaders convened in Brussels for a confidential emergency meeting to consider ways to lessen dependence on the United States. The gathering was prompted by Trump's threat to use military force to seize Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, described by some as a “Trump whisperer,” is reported to have employed a strategy of praising the president and mimicking his communication style in an effort to maintain alliance cohesion. The report claims Rutte encouraged other leaders to frame increased defense spending as a Trump victory and to adopt the president’s phrasing in diplomatic messages.

According to the article, several European officials, including Finland’s president and Norway’s prime minister, adjusted their wording and capitalization in texts to Trump, and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reportedly used the term “tariffs” instead of “sanctions” when speaking with him.

The report adds that a later attempt by a group of leaders to negotiate a Ukraine peace deal at the White House was unsuccessful, with participants describing the experience as difficult and indicating limited influence over U.S. policy.
