Console Prices Rise Amid Tariffs and Chip Shortage, Prompting Voter Concerns
U.S. tariffs on video-game hardware and a shortage of RAM driven by AI data-center expansion have led to price hikes for major consoles, affecting young male voters ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Prices for the three leading video-game consoles have risen sharply over the past 15 months, a trend analysts link to recent U.S. tariffs and a tightening supply of memory chips. Microsoft announced that the Xbox Series X will cost $300 more than its original $499.99 launch price, while Sony’s PlayStation 5 is now $150 higher and Nintendo’s Switch 2 will add $50 in September. Earlier increases also affected accessories and older models such as the original Switch.
The Entertainment Software Association warned that the administration’s “Liberation Day” tariffs, announced in April 2025, would harm the industry and consumers. > "Tariffs on video game devices and related products would negatively impact hundreds of millions of Americans and would harm the industry’s significant contributions to the U.S. economy," the association said.
Industry observers note that video-game hardware did not receive the exemptions granted to many other electronics, exposing manufacturers to higher duties on components sourced from China and Taiwan. At the same time, the rapid expansion of AI data centers has driven up demand for DDR5 RAM, with the price of a 2-x-16 GB kit climbing from about $100 in September 2024 to over $400 by January 2025, according to PCPartPicker.
The combined effect of tariffs and chip shortages is contributing to broader inflation in consumer electronics, including higher prices for smartphones and computers. Polling shows that 71% of Americans oppose new data-center construction in their neighborhoods, and only 32% view AI as primarily beneficial.
The price increases are resonating with younger male voters, a demographic that has become increasingly important to the Republican Party. A December 2025 survey found that just 32% of men aged 18-29 approved of the president’s performance, and many expressed frustration over rising gaming costs ahead of the November 2026 midterms.
The upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto VI, priced at $80 for the standard edition and $100 for an ultimate edition, is expected to further highlight the affordability issue for gamers.
Analysts suggest that the console price hikes could become a political talking point as voters assess the impact of trade policy and technology-driven supply constraints on everyday expenses.
