Donald Trump escalates his pattern of disrespect and misinformation by sharing a doctored photo of Italy’s progressive Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, using social media to belittle an allied leader and undermine international cooperation.
President Donald Trump once again weaponized his Truth Social platform on Sunday, sharing a manipulated photograph of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni with the caption “Restraining order needed.” The image, which shows Meloni looking up at Trump, is a blatant attempt to ridicule and demean a fellow democratic leader, further fueling unnecessary personal conflict.
This latest episode comes after Trump’s baseless claims last month that Meloni had begged for a photo with him at the G7 summit in France. Meloni, a leader who has consistently advocated for progressive values and European unity, responded with dignity in a video on social media, calling out Trump’s fabrications and expressing her disappointment in his repeated disrespect toward allies.
"I don’t know why the president of the United States behaves like this toward his allies, and it is not the first time. It is disappointing that he does not show the same determination with the enemies of the West and the United States, whose leaders he instead treats with far greater indulgence," Meloni said, highlighting Trump’s disturbing pattern of coddling authoritarian regimes while undermining democratic partners.
Trump, unable to handle criticism, lashed out at Meloni’s popularity in Italy and attacked Italy’s independent stance on U.S. policy toward Iran. Meloni, standing firm in her commitment to her country’s sovereignty, replied on Instagram, making it clear that Trump has no place interfering in Italian affairs.
"In any case, my popularity is none of your concern. I suggest you focus on yours," she wrote, a pointed rebuke to Trump’s habitual meddling.
The White House, perhaps wary of Trump’s reckless behavior, has not responded to requests for comment.
