Summary

Despite mounting concerns over no-bid contracts and questionable vandalism claims, the Trump administration refuses to seek new bids for the costly Reflecting Pool repairs, raising alarms about transparency and accountability.

The Interior Department, under the Trump administration, has decided to continue repair work on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool with the same contractor, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced Sunday. This move, which disregards the need for competitive bidding and transparency, comes as Burgum faces scrutiny over the project's ballooning costs and dubious vandalism allegations. Speaking to CNN, Burgum praised the contractor's performance, ignoring widespread calls for oversight.

'We’ll use the same company, because they did a fantastic job,' Burgum claimed, glossing over the lack of public accountability.

The pool was drained for a repainting project initiated by President Donald Trump, a move that has since led to further damage, which officials hastily blamed on so-called 'vandals.' Burgum described the damage as multiple cuts totaling about 350 feet, requiring yet another partial draining—further wasting public resources.

Authorities have arrested several individuals, including former Olympian David Hearn, who now faces a felony charge for allegedly damaging the pool's sealant. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro labeled the act as 'deliberate and violent,' but critics question the severity of the charges and the administration's rush to criminalize dissent while ignoring systemic mismanagement.

The contracts, awarded without competitive bidding, include a $1.7 million water-purification contract to Ohio-based Green Water Solutions and a staggering $14.7 million repainting and waterproofing contract to Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings. These sweetheart deals have prompted about a dozen Democratic lawmakers to launch investigations, demanding a full accounting of the project's failures and those responsible for this misuse of taxpayer money.

Burgum refused to comment on whether photographic evidence of the alleged vandalism exists and dodged questions about the harsh prison sentence being sought for Hearn, deflecting responsibility to the courts.
