Judge denies Trump request to postpone $5.8 million payment to E. Jean Carroll

Summary

A New York federal judge ordered former President Donald Trump to respond by July 7 to E. Jean Carroll’s demand for the $5.8 million judgment, rejecting his bid for additional time.

A U.S. District Judge in Manhattan denied former President Donald Trump’s request for an extension to answer a payment demand from writer E. Jean Carroll. The judge’s one-sentence order, issued on July 4, requires Trump to file a response by July 7.

Carroll, who won a civil verdict in 2023 after a jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation, asked the court on June 30 to order the nearly $5.8 million judgment, plus accrued interest, be paid immediately. Her attorneys argued that Trump’s delays were intended to stall the enforcement of the verdict.

Trump had previously sought Supreme Court review of the jury’s decision, which was denied on June 29. He cited the departure of his former lead counsel, who became a federal judge, and the need for his new attorney to become familiar with the case as reasons for the requested postponement.

The judge’s ruling means Trump must now address the payment demand within three days, while a separate defamation judgment of $83.3 million from a 2024 jury remains under appeal.
