Iranian political and military leaders convened for a week-long funeral ceremony for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a event intended to project cohesion after recent conflicts with the United States and Israel. The ceremony featured a military band and saw the president, the speaker of Parliament, the head of the judiciary and senior Revolutionary Guard commanders appear together for the first time since the war began months earlier.
Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father as supreme leader in March, was notably absent, raising speculation within Iran’s political circles about the actual power structure and the extent of internal disagreements.
"The presence of all top officials demonstrates our collective resolve," a spokesperson for the funeral committee said.
Analysts note that the visible unity may be temporary, as the lack of the new supreme leader at such a high-profile event suggests underlying factional tensions.
