Extreme heat threatens celebrations for U.S. 250th anniversary

Summary

A severe heat wave across the eastern United States is forcing the cancellation or modification of several high-profile Fourth of July events marking the nation's 250th birthday, while officials urge precautions to protect public health.

A sweltering heat wave has settled over much of the eastern United States as the country prepares for large-scale celebrations of its 250th anniversary of independence. Temperatures in cities such as Philadelphia and Boston are expected to reach around 38 °C (100 °F), with high humidity raising the perceived heat index.

The extreme conditions have already disrupted major events. The Great American State Fair on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was temporarily closed on Friday after temperatures topped 39 °C (102 °F). In Philadelphia, the Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade was cancelled, and other local parades in Pennsylvania were either postponed or called off due to safety concerns.

Transportation is also affected. Amtrak warned that high temperatures can cause rail, bridge and overhead wires to expand, potentially leading to speed restrictions and delays.

"Extreme heat can cause rail, bridge and overhead wires to expand," the company said in a statement.

Cities are rolling out heat-relief measures. New York City has deployed more than 200 teams to check on homeless residents and direct people to cooling centres, including mobile vans and misting-fan sites. Boston is offering free entry to air-conditioned museums, while Providence has extended hours at public pools.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City urged residents to stay indoors and keep air-conditioners set at 26 °C (78 °F) to reduce strain on the power grid.

"Stay inside and avoid extraordinary temperatures," Mamdani said.

Health officials advise drinking plenty of water, taking hourly breaks in shade or air-conditioned areas, and monitoring vulnerable individuals for signs of heat-related illness. The National Weather Service recommends limiting alcohol consumption and seeking medical attention if symptoms such as rapid pulse, dizziness, or nausea appear.

The heat wave adds a challenging backdrop to the anniversary, which includes a benefit concert in Los Angeles hosted by Queen Latifah, a time-capsule burial in Philadelphia, and a large fireworks display planned for Washington, D.C.
