Trump to hold rally on National Mall during U.S. 250th anniversary celebrations

President Donald Trump is scheduled to address a crowd on the fenced-off National Mall in Washington on July 4, marking the United States' 250th anniversary. The event, promoted by the administration’s Freedom 250 group as a "Great American State Fair," will feature military flyovers and a fireworks display.

The celebration coincides with nationwide festivities, including free cupcakes and a pop-music concert in Philadelphia and tall-ship displays in New York. Washington’s annual Independence Day gathering, which usually attracts hundreds of thousands, is expected to face increased security measures, possible thunderstorms and temperatures near 100°F (38°C).

Critics note that the anniversary planning, traditionally overseen by a nonpartisan commission created in 2016, has been largely overtaken by the Freedom 250 organization, which has installed attractions such as a Ferris wheel and displays by conservative groups and defense contractors. Several Democratic-led states declined to send delegations, and some performers withdrew, citing concerns over partisanship.

Other Freedom 250-branded activities include a faith rally with predominantly conservative Christian speakers, mixed-martial-arts bouts on the White House grounds for Trump's 80th birthday, and an IndyCar race slated for August. A Reuters/Ipsos poll indicated that a majority of Americans—three-quarters of Democrats and half of Republicans—believe the anniversary events have become overly political.

The administration has also undertaken renovations of several monuments in the capital, though a $15 million refurbishment of the Lincoln Memorial’s Reflecting Pool has encountered issues with paint and algae, prompting additional security presence.
