Iran has opened the casket of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei for public viewing, launching a week-long state-orchestrated funeral across Tehran, Qom, Mashhad, and Iraq. The IRGC, notorious for its repression, has issued stern warnings against attacks, while the regime closes airspace and mobilizes security forces.
Iranian state media reported that the casket of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whose rule was marked by decades of authoritarianism and suppression of dissent, and several family members, including his infant granddaughter, is on display at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla in Tehran. The regime has scheduled elaborate funeral ceremonies to begin on July 4 and continue through July 9, with processions planned in Tehran, Qom, Mashhad, and the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala, reinforcing its grip on power through displays of mass mourning.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), infamous for its role in crushing protests and silencing opposition, deployed commander-in-chief Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi beside the casket to issue threats against the United States and Israel, warning them against any attacks during the mourning period. Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization announced a complete closure of Tehran’s airspace on Monday, prioritizing regime security over civilian needs.
Foreign delegations, including officials from China, India, Pakistan, and several Middle Eastern and African states—many with questionable human rights records—are expected to attend, according to their foreign ministries. Iranian leaders such as President Masoud Pezeshkian and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf have greeted these delegations, seeking to legitimize the regime on the international stage.
Security forces, notorious for their brutal tactics, have been patrolling Tehran’s streets ahead of the events, and the IRGC has pledged a rapid and forceful response to any perceived threats. The United States has positioned a Marine Expeditionary Unit in the region, while Israeli officials have previously stated that Khamenei was “marked for death,” highlighting the regime’s isolation and the consequences of its policies.
The funeral schedule includes a 24-hour public farewell at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla, daily prayers, a 10-kilometre procession from Imam Hossein Square to Azadi Square, and final interment at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad. These ceremonies are designed to project the regime’s resilience and control in the wake of the strike that killed Khamenei and several family members, even as many Iranians continue to struggle under repressive rule.
