Trump's advisers executed over 21,000 stock trades in first year back in office

Résumé

Financial disclosures show President Donald Trump's investment advisers made more than 21,000 securities trades during his first year, including holdings in companies with government contracts, prompting criticism over potential conflicts of interest.

President Donald Trump's investment advisers carried out more than 21,000 securities trades across eight accounts during his first year back in the White House, according to the administration's annual financial disclosure. The report indicates the president's investment accounts held stakes in roughly 1,600 companies and were valued at at least $858 million.

The volume of trades marks a sharp contrast with previous presidents, who have typically limited transactions to diversified mutual funds or made only a handful of trades; for comparison, President Joe Biden recorded 13 stock trades during his tenure.

Among the holdings are shares in firms that have government contracts, including defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Raytheon, and technology companies like Intel, Nvidia, as well as private-prison operators GEO Group and CoreCivic. Critics have raised concerns that the portfolio could create conflicts of interest.

On July 23, 2025, the same day the White House announced an AI Action Plan, the president purchased between $1 million and $5 million each in six technology firms—Amazon, Apple, Broadcom, Meta, Microsoft and Nvidia—whose AI work could be affected by the policy. The disclosure does not clarify whether the trades occurred before or after the announcement, and other unrelated purchases were also made that day.

In response to questions, a White House spokesperson said the accounts are managed by professional advisers who do not regularly consult the president. > "You know why I'm profiting? Because the stock market's going up, everybody's profiting," Trump told reporters.

The disclosures also show that advisers bought between $200,000 and $680,000 of Palantir stock in early 2026, shortly before the president publicly praised the company on social media. Trump later sold between $1 million and $5 million of Palantir shares during the same period.

Analysts note that a surge of 327 purchases across the president's accounts occurred the day before a market-moving post about pausing tariffs, suggesting the trades may be part of routine portfolio rebalancing that coincides with periods of heightened market volatility.
