Sen. Mitch McConnell found unconscious at home before hospitalization, remains in care

Résumé

Senator Mitch McConnell was discovered unconscious at his Washington residence on June 14, prompting a 911 call and an Advanced Life Support response; he remains hospitalized but is coordinating with staff on legislative matters.

Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell was found unconscious at his Washington, D.C., home on June 14, according to a 911 call recording obtained by media outlets. The call requested an Advanced Life Support response as emergency crews were dispatched.

The senator's office confirmed that he is still hospitalized but is "working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters" while the Senate is out of session. A statement said the senator "appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital" and noted that he is continuing to improve.

Senator Rand Paul, also of Kentucky, said the day after McConnell's hospitalization that the senator was "doing better" and was "fully engaged" with his staff. McConnell's office added that he will not be voting this week but remains involved in Senate business.

The incident follows previous health issues for the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history, including a prior eight-day hospital stay earlier this year for flu-like symptoms and other medical episodes in recent years. McConnell announced in February that he will not seek re-election and plans to retire at the end of his term in January 2027.
