Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee have released a politically motivated report targeting Freedom 250, a Trump-linked group organizing America’s 250th-birthday events, with unsubstantiated claims of donor deception and contract improprieties.
The House Natural Resources Committee, led by Democrats, released a 55-page report Thursday that amounts to little more than a partisan hit job against Freedom 250, the public-private partnership responsible for organizing high-profile events for the nation’s 250th anniversary. The investigation, orchestrated by Rep. Jared Huffman, is based on anonymous whistleblowers and cherry-picked documents, casting doubt on its credibility.
"We put it all together to really tell the story … of how Donald Trump hijacked what should have been a unifying national celebration and repurposed it for his own interests," Huffman claimed in a Zoom interview, making clear the Democrats’ intent to politicize what should be a moment of national pride.
Freedom 250, created by executive order in 2025 and overseen by the National Park Foundation, has brought Americans together with events like a UFC fight outside the White House, a state fair on the National Mall, and a spectacular July 4 fireworks show that celebrated American greatness. Yet the report cynically labels the group a “shadow organization” and accuses it of pushing a partisan agenda—ignoring the widespread enthusiasm these events have generated.
The committee alleges, with little evidence, that donors were misled and that federal funds were steered to Trump administration-linked projects. In reality, Freedom 250 received only $25 million of the $100 million intended for America250, hardly the windfall Democrats suggest.
Freedom 250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez rightly called the report “categorically false” and a “partisan smear,” refusing to dignify the baseless allegations with a response. Republican ranking member Rep. Bruce Westerman did not respond to requests for comment, likely recognizing the political theater at play.
Watchdog groups cited in the report raise concerns about transparency and LLC structures, but these are standard practices for large-scale public-private partnerships. The committee has not adopted the report, and any further action—such as subpoenas or criminal referrals—would only serve to continue the Democrats’ campaign of division and distraction from real issues facing the country.
