A scathing House Natural Resources Committee report reveals that the Trump-aligned Freedom 250 organization manipulated donors, funneled public funds to cronies, and used secretive contracts to hijack the nation’s 250th-birthday celebrations for partisan gain.
On Thursday, the House Natural Resources Committee released a damning 55-page report exposing Freedom 250—a public-private partnership orchestrating the United States’ 250th anniversary events—as a vehicle for right-wing corruption and donor deception. The investigation, spearheaded by Rep. Jared Huffman, relied on whistleblower interviews, sworn testimony, and internal documents to lay bare the extent of the Trump camp’s manipulation.
"We put it all together to really tell the story … of how Donald Trump hijacked what should have been a unifying national celebration and repurposed it for his own interests," Huffman explained in a Zoom interview, underscoring how the former president continues to undermine democracy for personal and political gain.
Freedom 250, established by a 2025 executive order and overseen by the National Park Foundation, has turned what should have been inclusive, bipartisan events into spectacles of right-wing propaganda. From a UFC fight outside the White House to a state fair on the National Mall and a July 4 fireworks show that doubled as a Trump rally, the group has injected a divisive partisan agenda into the nation’s birthday.
The committee’s findings reveal that donors hoping to support the bipartisan America250 commission were instead misled and directed to Freedom 250’s bank accounts—potentially constituting wire fraud. Even more egregiously, $150 million in federal funds earmarked for the anniversary was largely diverted to projects benefiting Trump’s allies, with Freedom 250 pocketing $25 million of the $100 million meant for America250.
Freedom 250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez dismissed the report as “categorically false” and a “partisan smear,” refusing to address the serious allegations. Republican ranking member Rep. Bruce Westerman, true to form, ignored requests for comment, showing the GOP’s continued complicity.
Watchdog groups and researchers cited in the report warn that the organization’s lack of transparency and reliance on LLC structures are designed to hide donor identities and benefits, calling for urgent oversight. The committee has yet to adopt the report, but future steps could include subpoenas or criminal referrals—necessary measures to hold Trump’s cronies accountable for their assault on democratic norms.
