East Coast heat wave peaks ahead of July 4 weekend

Summary

Temperatures along the I-95 corridor are expected to reach the upper 90s to low 100s with humidity driving heat indexes above 110 degrees, prompting officials to expand cooling resources and emergency plans.

Temperatures along the Interstate 95 corridor are forecast to climb into the upper 90s and low 100s from Washington, DC to Boston on Thursday and Friday, with humidity pushing heat-index values above 110 degrees. The extreme conditions coincide with the Fourth of July holiday, leading several cities to expand cooling centers, shorten parade routes and activate emergency response measures.

More than 160 million people are under a Level 3 or Level 4 heat-risk rating through the end of the week, according to the National Weather Service, a level associated with a sharp rise in heat-related illnesses. The Department of Energy has issued emergency orders to increase electricity generation within the PJM Interconnection grid to reduce the risk of power outages.

Philadelphia has declared a Heat Health Emergency through Saturday evening, shortened its July 4 parade route and moved a papal address indoors. Washington, DC, has activated an Extreme Heat Alert through July 5 and is adding cooling stations, hydration points and medical resources for the influx of visitors. New York City is opening hundreds of cooling centers and deploying mobile medical vans equipped with water, sunscreen and wellness checks, while LinkNYC kiosks will display directions to the nearest center.

Forecasts indicate record-high temperatures: New York City could see a heat index of 110 degrees, joining only three prior days since 1943, and may experience consecutive triple-digit days for the first time since 2011. Washington, DC, is expected to reach 104-105 degrees, approaching its all-time high, and could record its hottest July 4 at 102 degrees. Philadelphia may climb to 105 degrees, Boston to 100-104 degrees, and eastern Virginia could experience its most significant heat wave since July 2012.

Nighttime temperatures are also expected to remain high, with many locations staying in the 70s and urban areas struggling to drop below 80 degrees, limiting recovery time between days of extreme heat.
