Sen. Mitch McConnell Hospitalized After Found Unconscious at D.C. Home

Summary

The 84-year-old Kentucky senator was taken to a hospital after being found unconscious, marking his second admission this year.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, 84, was taken to a hospital last month after he was discovered unconscious at his Washington, D.C., residence, according to multiple reports. The incident comes four and a half months after his previous hospitalization for flu-like symptoms, during which he checked himself into a hospital, received a positive prognosis and returned to the Senate after a week.

McConnell, who has served in the Senate for 42 years and will finish his term in January, has faced several health issues in recent years, including a concussion and a fractured rib from a fall in 2023 and another fall in 2024 that caused leg stiffness. His office has said his occasional use of a wheelchair is related to lingering effects of childhood polio. He has also experienced two episodes in which he appeared to freeze while speaking to reporters; neurologists who reviewed the footage suggested the events were more consistent with brief seizures than simple lightheadedness.

Republican Rep. Andy Barr and Democrat Charles Booker are competing in the upcoming midterm election for the seat that could be vacated if McConnell leaves office before his term ends.
