U.S. Commerce Department lifts export restrictions on Anthropic's advanced AI models

Summary

The Department of Commerce removed export controls on Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models, allowing the company to restore access and resume limited releases to approved partners.

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced that export controls on Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 artificial-intelligence models have been lifted, the company said in a statement Tuesday evening. Anthropic said it will begin restoring access to the models the following day and will provide an update soon.

"Over the past two weeks, we have worked closely with Anthropic to analyze and approve Fable 5 to ensure alignment across the US Government and strengthen America’s leadership in AI," Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick wrote on X.

Fable is a version of Anthropic's flagship Mythos model that includes additional safety guardrails for public use. The earlier export ban, imposed after a partner identified a method to bypass those guardrails, required Anthropic to suspend foreign-national access and temporarily disable customer use of both models. After negotiations addressing the identified cyber risk, the Commerce Department last week permitted Anthropic to release Mythos to a select group of government-approved entities. Details of the modifications made to Fable to satisfy the export-control review were not disclosed.

Experts note that the Mythos model can exploit cybersecurity vulnerabilities rapidly, prompting Anthropic to limit its deployment to a small set of key partners to protect critical software systems.
