Actress Daveigh Chase, recognized for her role in the horror film "The Ring" and as the voice of Lilo in Disney's "Lilo & Stitch," died on June 16 at age 35. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner reported that the primary cause of death was Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), with chronic polysubstance use noted as a secondary factor.
"Behind the scenes, she’s faced more than her share of hardship. After a difficult childhood and a painful falling out with her family, Daveigh was bullied and struggled to find safety and happiness in downtown LA. When we met, I promised to protect her and give her the love and comfort she deserved," wrote her boyfriend Roy Hernandez in a GoFundMe post.
Her father, John David Schwallier, told The New York Times that his daughter had been homeless and living with her boyfriend near the hospital where she died, and that she had dealt with drug use since her teenage years. He added that he arrived at the hospital shortly before her death.
Chase's career also included roles in "Donnie Darko," "Big Love," "Sabrina the Teenage Witch," "ER," "Mercy" and "Beethoven’s 5th," with her last credited performance listed on IMDb in 2016 for the video game Let It Die. After stepping back from acting, she faced legal issues, including drug possession charges and a stolen-vehicle incident.
