Prince Harry May Delay UK Visit Over Lack of Taxpayer-Funded Security

Summary

Prince Harry is reconsidering a planned trip to the United Kingdom with Meghan and their children after learning that no taxpayer-funded police protection will be provided.

Prince Harry is reportedly reassessing a scheduled visit to the United Kingdom with his wife, Meghan, and their two children after officials indicated that the trip would not be covered by taxpayer-funded police protection. The family had accepted an invitation to stay in a royal residence for their first UK trip since the 2022 Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

A source close to the couple said the Home Office and the committee responsible for security assessments had "wilfully created conditions that are making it nearly impossible" for the family to travel safely, according to a report. Harry is seeking a solution that would allow the visit to proceed, as he wishes his seven-year-old son, Archie, and five-year-old daughter, Lilibet, to see their grandfather, King Charles.

The Duke had been awaiting a review by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee on his security needs, but learned that the review had not taken place and that all assessments had been paused. The source added that the uncertain security situation and speculation about accommodation were complicating planning for the private security team.

Harry’s protection level was reduced in 2020 after he stepped back from royal duties, and he has not received police protection for private travel since then, except for official royal events. He is currently involved in a legal dispute with the Home Office over security arrangements for any future UK visits.

The planned trip was also intended to mark the one-year countdown to the Invictus Games, which Harry will host in Birmingham in July 2025, and to allow the Duchess to join him at several public engagements. A government spokesperson said the UK’s protective security system is "rigorous and proportionate" and that detailed information about arrangements is not disclosed to protect security integrity.
