Chain-Link Fence Installed Around Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Ahead of July 4 Fireworks
A perimeter fence was erected around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on Thursday to prepare for the Fourth of July fireworks, prompting tourists to view the site from behind the barrier.
A tall chain-link fence now surrounds the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool as officials ready the area for the annual Fourth of July fireworks display. The Interior Department said the barrier, installed Thursday evening, is intended to protect the public, noting that one of the fireworks launch sites is located at the pool.
The fencing follows a series of failed renovation attempts under the previous administration, which had allocated $16.4 million for a filtration upgrade and a blue waterproof coating. The coating quickly deteriorated, turning the water green and prompting the administration to blame unidentified vandals.
Visitors on Saturday gathered near the fence to photograph the water through the mesh and to read safety signs warning of explosives. One tourist, Chris Brewer, said he had been following news about the reflecting pool and found the sight "funny," before continuing his bike ride.
The installation marks a return to a safety measure previously used during past fireworks celebrations.
