Freedom 250 cancels Vanilla Ice performance due to weather

Summary

The Freedom 250 organization postponed the Great American State Fair and cancelled a scheduled Vanilla Ice concert after announcing inclement weather, leaving the future of the event uncertain.

The Freedom 250 public-private partnership, which is organizing celebrations for the United States' 250th anniversary, announced Friday that the Great American State Fair would close for the remainder of the day because of inclement weather. The cancellation included a scheduled performance by rapper Vanilla Ice, who had been set to appear on a stage on the National Mall.

Freedom 250 said on X that guest, staff and partner safety was the top priority and that the fair would reopen Saturday at 10 a.m. Vanilla Ice had posted on Instagram earlier that day describing the event as a “once in a lifetime opportunity” and expressing excitement about the performance.

It is not yet known whether the concert will be rescheduled. The organization has not responded to requests for comment.

Earlier in the week, several other artists withdrew from the Freedom 250 lineup, including Martini McBride, The Commodores, Bret Michaels, Young MC, and the acts associated with Milli Vanilli and C+C Music Factory. Some cited concerns about political involvement in the event.

President Donald Trump delivered a rally-style speech at the fair’s kickoff, praising renovation projects in Washington, D.C., and referencing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The program also featured a performance of “God Bless the USA” by Lee Greenwood and a rendition of the national anthem by Alexis Wilkins, who is identified as the girlfriend of FBI Director Kash Patel.
