Freedom 250 cancels Vanilla Ice performance due to weather

Summary

The Freedom 250 celebration announced that a scheduled Vanilla Ice concert was called off two hours before showtime because of inclement weather, with the fair set to reopen the next morning.

President Donald Trump's Freedom 250 organization said the Great American State Fair would close for the remainder of Friday after "inclement weather" forced the cancellation of a scheduled performance by rapper Vanilla Ice. The group posted on X that guest safety was the top priority and that the fair would reopen Saturday at 10 a.m.

Vanilla Ice, whose real name is Rob Van Winkle, had posted on Instagram earlier that day describing the event as a "once in a lifetime opportunity" and expressed excitement about the show on the National Mall.

It is not yet known whether the concert will be rescheduled. The Independent has sought comment from Freedom 250 officials.

The cancellation follows a series of artist withdrawals from the Freedom 250 lineup, including Martini McBride, The Commodores, Bret Michaels, Young MC, and representatives of Milli Vanilli and C+C Music Factory, who cited concerns about political involvement.

Trump has promoted the event with a rally-style speech and statements on Truth Social, describing himself as a major attraction and praising renovation projects in Washington, D.C. The kickoff also featured a performance of "God Bless the USA" by Lee Greenwood and a rendition of the national anthem by Alexis Wilkins, which drew mixed reactions online.
