Microsoft extends Windows 10 extended security updates to October 2027

Summary

Microsoft announced that its Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for Windows 10 home users will now run until October 12, 2027, giving consumers an additional year to receive security patches.

Microsoft confirmed that the Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for personal-use devices has been extended by one year, with coverage now lasting until October 12, 2027. The change applies to users who have not yet enrolled as well as those already in the program, whose protection will continue automatically.

"Windows 10 support has ended. You can enroll in ESU any time until the programme ends on 12 October, 2027," the company wrote in a support document. "If you’re already enrolled, your coverage will automatically continue through that date—no action needed."

"This extension provides customers with more time to transition to a new Windows 11 PC while continuing to receive critical security updates," Microsoft told Windows Latest.

The ESU program, which began after Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, allows home users on version 22H2 to receive monthly security patches but no new features or technical support. Enrollment is free for devices synced with a Microsoft account; otherwise users can redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points or pay a one-time fee of $30 for a license covering up to ten devices.

Microsoft noted that devices not enrolled in ESU may miss important Secure Boot certificate updates, potentially causing startup validation issues on older hardware. Since the program’s launch, Microsoft has issued a security update every month, maintaining a consistent patch schedule for the retired operating system.
