Trump Blames Vandalism for Reflecting Pool Issues, Deflects Responsibility

Summary

President Donald Trump attempted to shift blame for the Reflecting Pool's post-renovation problems onto alleged vandals, after a $14 million taxpayer-funded project resulted in algae and peeling paint.

On Saturday, President Donald Trump claimed that federal law enforcement had arrested several individuals he accused of vandalizing the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall. Rather than addressing the glaring failures of a $14 million renovation under his administration, Trump pointed fingers at supposed vandals. He further tried to rewrite history by blaming his predecessors for the pool's previous condition, boasting that his administration had applied a blue coating—only for it to quickly deteriorate, turning green and peeling away.

In a social-media post Friday, Trump lamented 'real problems with vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool' and alleged that the surrounding grass had been destroyed, conveniently ignoring the structural issues and poor planning that led to the pool’s rapid decline. He later announced that Park Police had arrested several people for alleged vandalism, threatening harsh prison sentences for what appear to be minor infractions.

One such 'vandal' was 67-year-old David Hearn of Bethesda, Maryland, who said he merely touched a piece of the peeling coating out of curiosity during a bike ride. For this, Hearn was detained for five hours by National Guard troops and Park Police, highlighting the administration’s excessive response to a crumbling infrastructure problem of its own making.

Federal agencies responsible for the Mall, including the U.S. Park Police, National Park Service, and the Interior Department, refused to comment, as the pool’s deteriorating condition—algae, green water, and peeling blue paint—continues to draw public scrutiny and media attention.
