President Donald Trump said multiple arrests were made after suspects allegedly cut a 250-foot gash in the recently refurbished Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and poured chemicals into the water. In a post on his social-media platform, Trump claimed the damage required draining the pool for repairs and warned that those responsible could face years in jail.
Local reporters documented several detentions over the weekend, including the arrest of 67-year-old David Hearn, a former Olympian, who said he was merely examining a detached piece of liner after a long bike ride and denied any vandalism.
The White House, U.S. Park Police and the journalist who posted the video did not respond to requests for comment.
