President Donald Trump instructed the Senate on Wednesday to cancel the afternoon confirmation hearing for Jay Clayton, his nominee for director of national intelligence, and warned he would not sign a reauthorization of a key surveillance law unless the chamber approved a sweeping election reform bill that has repeatedly failed. The abrupt change disrupted Majority Leader John Thune’s plan to fast-track the nomination and left Republican senators scrambling to adjust their legislative strategy.
Thune, who questioned the president’s motive, said, "Good question." Senate Republican Lisa Murkowski added that Trump is "turning it ahead without telling us about it." Retiring Senator Thom Tillis called the postponement "a colossal mistake" and said it undermines the party’s ability to deliver results.
The move follows recent tensions over Trump’s endorsement of primary challengers, demands for funding allocations, and attempts to alter Senate rules. Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Tom Cotton described the delay as "regrettable," while Democratic counterpart Mark Warner blamed Trump, saying he "threw a live hand grenade into this whole process."
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson praised the administration’s collaboration with Senate leaders on tax cuts and border security, but the latest episode adds to Republican frustration as they navigate a stalled SAVE America Act and other legislative priorities.
Senators John Cornyn and Cynthia Lummis emphasized the need for realistic promises and honest communication, noting that the party’s ability to function depends on clear expectations rather than unilateral actions.
