Trump-backed candidates win key primaries in Georgia and Alabama as voters reject Oklahoma minimum-wage increase

Summary

Donald Trump’s endorsements helped Republican nominees Mike Collins and Barry Moore secure Senate nominations in Georgia and Alabama, while Oklahoma voters defeated a proposal to raise the state minimum wage to $15 an hour.

Mike Collins secured the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat in Georgia after receiving a last-minute endorsement from President Donald Trump, defeating Governor Brian Kemp’s preferred candidate Derek Dooley. Collins, a hard-line immigration legislator, won the primary less than an hour after polls closed.

In the Georgia gubernatorial primary, both Trump and Kemp backed Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, but voters chose businessman Rick Jackson, who spent more than $100 million of personal funds and was backed by Senators Ted Cruz and Rick Scott.

In Alabama, Rep. Barry Moore prevailed over former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson in the Republican Senate runoff, a victory attributed to Trump’s support after former Sen. Tommy Tuberville vacated the seat to run for governor.

Washington, D.C., voters continued to favor Janeese Lewis George, a self-identified democratic socialist, who led the ranked-choice mayoral race with 53% of the vote counted, despite Trump’s criticism of a potential left-leaning administration.

Oklahoma voters rejected a ballot initiative to raise the state minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2029, with roughly 56% voting against the measure. The proposal would have been the latest in a series of state-level wage hikes, though it failed despite broad national support for higher wages.
