Trump warns Iran of severe repercussions over nuclear ambitions and pledges to release memorandum

Summary

President Donald Trump told officials at the G7 that Iran would face “ultimate consequences” if it pursued a nuclear weapon, and said he would make the Iran memorandum of understanding public.

President Donald Trump warned Iran that any attempt to develop, purchase or acquire a nuclear weapon would trigger "ultimate consequences," telling reporters at a bilateral meeting with Qatar during the G7 summit in the French Alps. He said the United States would not allow Tehran to obtain such a capability and emphasized that preventing a nuclear-armed Iran remains a top priority.

Trump also said he is prepared to send his proposed Iran memorandum of understanding (MOU) to Congress for review and to hold a press conference where he would read the document word-for-word to ensure accurate coverage. He described the MOU as "a wall against a nuclear weapon," contrasting it with the previous Obama-era agreement, which he claimed cost the United States billions of dollars.

The president asserted that the United States would not provide any American funds to Iran under the deal, rejecting reports that the agreement involved financial payments. He added that the United States is monitoring Iran’s enriched uranium and plans to destroy it rather than take it.

Vice President JD Vance, speaking on a separate interview, said the plan could have "transformative impacts" on the Middle East and noted that Gulf Arab states support the proposal. He emphasized that any benefits for Iran would depend on Tehran’s compliance during a 60-day test period.

U.S. officials also reported that naval operations in the region continue, including a replenishment at sea by the USS Delbert D. Black, as the United States prepares for a potential signing ceremony in Switzerland.

"If they do, all hell will rain down on them," Trump said, reiterating his stance that Iran must fully comply with the MOU to avoid further escalation.
