Carolina Hurricanes win second Stanley Cup with shutout in Game 6
Rookie goaltender Brandon Bussi posted a 22-save shutout as the Hurricanes defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in Game 6 to capture the franchise’s second Stanley Cup.
Carolina secured a 3-0 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Sunday, clinching the team's second championship since relocating to Raleigh in 1997. Rookie goaltender Brandon Bussi recorded a perfect 22-save shutout, allowing no goals after entering the series in Game 3 when veteran Frederik Andersen was pulled.
Bussi started the final three games of the series, and Carolina won each, overturning a 2-1 deficit to capture the title. The Hurricanes limited Vegas to 10 shots in the first period and held the opponent shot-less for the final 15:43 of the second period. Vegas, which had averaged 3.6 goals per game in the first five contests, failed to score in the decisive match.
Offensively, Carolina opened the scoring within five minutes when Taylor Hall converted a breakaway slapshot. Jackson Blake added a second goal in the second period with a rebound slapshot, extending the lead to 2-0 before a third goal secured the win. The team’s defensive performance continued a pattern from earlier rounds, where the Hurricanes ranked fifth in goals-against per game during the regular season and recorded three shutouts in the first three playoff rounds.
The victory will be celebrated in Las Vegas on Sunday night, while fans gathered at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh for a watch party.
