Republican Senator Mitch McConnell, the 84-year-old former Senate leader, was admitted to a hospital on Sunday, a spokesperson said. The statement from David Popp noted that the senator is receiving "excellent care" but did not provide details about the location or cause of admission.
McConnell, who stepped down as Senate leader while completing his final term that ends in January, has faced health challenges in recent years, including a wrist sprain after a fall in December 2024, a concussion-related hospitalization in March 2023, and previous falls that resulted in a shoulder surgery and periods of limited activity. He also has a history of polio and uses a wheelchair at times in the Capitol.
Despite his health issues, McConnell continues to serve in the Senate, attending sessions, chairing public hearings, and leading the Senate Appropriations subcommittee on defense.
