Trump speaks with Zelensky and Putin ahead of G7 summit

Resumen

President Trump held separate phone calls with Ukrainian President Zelensky and Russian President Putin on June 14, discussing the war in Ukraine and prospects for peace before the G7 summit in France.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said he spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on June 14, a call that lasted about 30 minutes and covered the war in Ukraine, diplomatic options and recent battlefield developments. Zelensky praised the conversation and said the two leaders agreed to continue discussing peace ideas at the upcoming G7 summit in France.

On the same day, Kremlin spokesman Yuri Ushakov reported that Trump also held a 55-minute call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Ushakov described the discussion as "friendly in nature" and said Trump emphasized the need to end hostilities, offering to influence European partners and Kyiv during the summit. The call reportedly included plans for Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to visit Russia again, as well as remarks about a forthcoming Iran agreement and congratulations to Putin on the World Cup and on efforts to reunite Russian and Ukrainian children.

Both calls occurred on the eve of the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, where Ukraine is expected to be a central topic. Trump is slated to attend the June 15-17 meeting and may meet Zelensky on the sidelines, though no formal bilateral session has been scheduled. Zelensky has previously thanked the United States for military aid, noting contributions ranging from Javelin missiles to Patriot air-defense systems.
