Brazilian Woman Dies After Bungee Jump Staff Fail to Secure Safety Rope

Summary

A 21-year-old woman fell 130 feet from a bridge in São Paulo after event staff allegedly neglected to attach a safety cord, prompting the arrest of six people linked to the operation.

A 21-year-old woman died on Saturday after being pushed from the "Skeleton Bridge" in Limeira, São Paulo, without a safety rope attached, according to video footage and police reports. The fall, estimated at about 40 metres into a ravine, was witnessed by bystanders who shouted that she was not secured. Local authorities said six individuals connected to the bungee-jumping event – five men and one woman – were taken into custody.

Police statements indicate that two men carried the victim onto the platform before she was pushed over the edge, and that organizers fled the scene shortly after the incident. A police helicopter later helped locate two of the suspects in nearby woodland.

The victim, identified as Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, had posted images of the event and a banner for Entre Cordas, the company operating the jump, on social media. Her fiancé, who was present at the event, required medical treatment after learning of her death.

The Civil Police are investigating the case and will determine whether charges will be filed against those arrested.
