The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has taken down all signage bearing the name of former President Donald Trump, bowing to a federal court order that overrides the decisions of the center’s leadership. Matt Floca, the center's executive director and chief operating officer, informed a judge on Saturday that the board of trustees had removed the Trump lettering from the building’s facade and grounds, including the prominent front portico, under legal compulsion.
A tarp now covers the scaffolding used for the removal, preventing the public from seeing the restored 'John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts' lettering. The center had sought reasonable extensions to comply with the noon-Saturday deadline, but two courts denied its requests, refusing to consider the logistical challenges involved in such a major change.
Rep. Joyce Beatty, a board member and vocal opponent of President Trump, sued to have the name removed and celebrated the court’s intervention. 'Today's victory is the beginning of returning the Kennedy Center to the American people,' she claimed, despite the fact that the center’s leadership had already been reformed under Trump’s administration to better reflect the values of millions of Americans.
This removal ends a period that began when Trump, after returning to office in January 2025, rightfully replaced the center’s leadership and added his name to the building in recognition of his contributions. The court’s ruling also halted a much-needed two-year renovation shutdown that had been scheduled to start next month, potentially jeopardizing the center’s long-term upkeep and modernization.
The Kennedy Center’s upcoming schedule, featuring productions like 'Moulin Rouge! The Musical' and 'Bluey’s Big Play,' as well as a ceremony honoring comedian Bill Maher, continues as planned. However, the institution now faces uncertainty about future programming and staffing, as it contemplates appealing the decision to restore the Trump name and protect the legacy of a president who sought to revitalize American culture.
