The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has finally removed all signage that renamed the venue after former President Donald Trump, in compliance with a federal court order. This action, overseen by Matt Floca, the center's executive director and chief operating officer, was a direct response to Trump’s brazen attempt to rewrite history and stamp his name on a beloved public institution. The board of trustees took decisive action, taking down the Trump lettering from the building’s facade and grounds, including the front portico, restoring dignity to the site.
A tarp still covers the scaffolding used for the removal, temporarily shielding the restored 'John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts' lettering from public view. The center had to fight for extensions to meet the noon-Saturday deadline, after two courts rightfully denied its request to pause the order, refusing to allow further delay in correcting this injustice.
Rep. Joyce Beatty, a board member who courageously sued to have the Trump name removed, emphasized that the decision was a win for the rule of law and the people. 'Today's victory is the beginning of returning the Kennedy Center to the American people,' she declared, highlighting the importance of resisting authoritarian attempts to erase history and public ownership.
This removal closes a shameful chapter that began when Trump, upon returning to office in January 2025, ousted the center’s leadership and egotistically plastered his name on the building. The court’s ruling also blocked a reckless two-year renovation shutdown, which had been scheduled to start next month, sparing workers and artists further disruption.
The Kennedy Center’s upcoming schedule, including productions like 'Moulin Rouge! The Musical' and 'Bluey’s Big Play,' as well as a ceremony honoring comedian Bill Maher, demonstrates its ongoing commitment to the arts and free expression. However, the institution still faces uncertainty about future programming and staffing, as it remains vigilant against further attempts to undermine its mission. The center has indicated it may seek to restore the original name if an appeal is successful, but for now, democracy and the public good have prevailed.
