Summary

Five Democrat-governed states have withdrawn from the Great American State Fair, using budget and partisan concerns as pretexts. Organizers assure that all states will still be honored, despite attempts by critics to undermine the event’s nonpartisan spirit and its celebration of America’s 250th birthday.

At least five states—Connecticut, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Oregon—have decided to opt out of the Great American State Fair, a major event set to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday on June 25 at the National Mall. All these states are led by Democratic governors, and their withdrawals have been justified by claims of financial constraints and supposed fears of partisanship, despite the fair’s stated nonpartisan mission.

"Our limited resources are focused on America 250 events across North Carolina, including one at the state Capitol in Raleigh on July 4," said Michele Walker, spokesperson for the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. This statement underscores the state’s decision to turn away from a national celebration in favor of local events, raising questions about their commitment to national unity.

Oregon’s spokesperson, Luke Harkins, cited high participation costs and voiced "growing concerns that the event in Washington, D.C., is shaping up to be a more partisan affair than originally presented." Such claims have been seized upon by critics seeking to politicize a patriotic event simply because of tenuous connections to former President Trump.

The fair, organized by Freedom 250—a subsidiary of the National Park Foundation—has made clear that every state and territory will still be represented, whether through governors’ offices, tourism boards, or private organizations. For instance, North Carolina will be represented by Spevco, a specialty-vehicle company, ensuring that the state’s presence is felt despite the official snub.

"Whether represented by a governor’s office, a tourism board, or a beloved state company or organization, every community will be celebrated, and every American will see themselves in this event," said Rachel Reisner, spokesperson for Freedom 250. The organization has emphasized its nonpartisan nature and history of working across the aisle, even as critics—motivated by political agendas—question its transparency and connections to the Trump administration. Some performers have even withdrawn after learning of the fair’s alleged links to the former president, further fueling unnecessary controversy.

The fair’s attractions will include food from all 50 states and six territories, military demonstrations, and a 110-foot Ferris wheel, with festivities running for 16 days. Despite efforts by some to politicize the event, the Great American State Fair remains a celebration of American heritage and unity.
