Graham Platner Wins Maine Democratic Senate Primary Amid Controversies; Trump-Backed Candidates Prevail in South Carolina GOP Primaries
Progressive candidate Graham Platner secured the Democratic nomination in Maine despite recent scandals, while Trump-endorsed Lindsey Graham and Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette won their respective Republican primaries in South Carolina.
Graham Platner, an oyster farmer and military veteran, won the Democratic Senate primary in Maine on June 9, positioning him to face incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the November election. Platner, who received endorsements from Senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Ro Khanna, overcame a wave of recent allegations, including past online comments, a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol, and accusations of personal misconduct. He told supporters that voters were backing a broader movement for working-class people rather than focusing on his personal history.
"The Democratic establishment and powerful interests spent months trying to stop Graham Platner. Instead, they demonstrated that voters in Maine and across America want to elect shake-up-the-system outsiders," said Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee.
In South Carolina, Republican candidates endorsed by former President Donald Trump also emerged victorious. Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette topped a crowded field in the GOP gubernatorial primary and will face Attorney General Alan Wilson in a runoff. Sen. Lindsey Graham secured a majority in the Senate primary, avoiding a runoff and maintaining his seat.
Trump praised Evette as an "America First Patriot" and a "WINNER" during his endorsement.
Both primaries are viewed as pivotal for upcoming midterm contests, with Platner's win bolstering the progressive wing of the Democratic Party and the South Carolina results underscoring Trump's continued influence within the Republican base.
