Detective Testifies Knife Used in Texas School Stabbing Was Legal

Summary

A Frisco police detective said the knife alleged to have been used in a high school track stabbing was legal to possess and carry in Texas, testimony given as the defendant's defense concluded.

Detective Beau Riley of the Frisco Police Department testified that the knife alleged to have been used by Karmelo Anthony to stab Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet was legal to own and to bring into a stadium under Texas law. Riley, a member of the department's Crimes Against Children unit, said he responded to the scene and interviewed several witnesses in the fieldhouse after the incident, including a track athlete who had spoken with Anthony before the confrontation. He also reviewed the student’s cellphone, camera roll, text messages and Snapchat account.

The defense called a 17-year-old track athlete who said he saw a disturbance near the stadium gates, recalling that "Everybody was standing up and I saw somebody get pushed or get punched, I don't know which." Prosecutors cross-examined the witness, noting that his recollection was limited and did not fully align with video evidence.

Riley’s testimony came as Anthony’s defense team wrapped up its case, with jurors hearing the details of the knife’s legality and the witness accounts.
