Recent Major Earthquakes Hit the Philippines, Causing Fatalities and Damage

Summary

Several strong earthquakes have struck the Philippines since 2022, resulting in dozens of deaths and extensive destruction, particularly in Mindanao and the central islands.

The Philippines, situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, has experienced a series of significant earthquakes in recent years. On June 8, 2026, an offshore magnitude 7.8 quake off Mindanao killed at least 32 people and generated tsunami waves along some coastlines. Earlier, on October 10, 2025, two offshore tremors hit the same region within hours; the first measured 7.4 magnitude and caused seven deaths, while the second registered 6.8 magnitude and prompted a local tsunami warning.

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Bogo City in Cebu province on September 30, 2025. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the quake occurred on a fault line that had been dormant for more than four centuries. The shallow event, which occurred while residents were sleeping, resulted in at least 72 fatalities, hundreds of injuries, and widespread damage.

In December 2023, a 7.6-magnitude quake off Mindanao led to three deaths as villagers fled their homes around midnight. A month later, a 6.7-magnitude offshore tremor on November 17, 2023, killed nine people, caused shopping-mall ceiling collapses, and triggered landslides and structural damage across the affected area, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

The most recent major event before 2026 was a magnitude 7.0 earthquake on Luzon island on July 27, 2022, which resulted in 11 deaths.
